Trained in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. Having completed dual training in both fields of Heart and Lung surgery gives a unique insight and ability to manage conditions which are often likely to affect both organs simultaneously.

David Sladden completed his training in Thoracic Surgery in 2017 and in Cardiac Surgery in 2018. From 2018 till 2019 he continued a fellowship in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, where he had been training for the preceding years.

He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery in October 2018 and was accepted onto the permanent specialist registry for Cardiothoracic surgery in 2019.

He has been practicing as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Mater Dei Hospital, Malta, since January 2022.

Some of the advancements in services include the introduction of a national lung cancer tumour management board and the national surveillance clinic for lung cancer survivors. In cardiac surgery he routinely performs coronary bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, mitral valve repairs and aortic surgery with selective antegrade cerebral protection.

Performing the first 30 VATS lobectomy operations, the first 6 VATS thymectomy operations and the first 10 sleeve lobectomy surgeries in Malta, he continues to push the boundaries in Thoracic surgery. In cardiac surgery he has performed the first Resilia Inspiris valve implantation with further innovations in techniques of existing cardiac operations.
