VATS Sympathectomy
VATS means minimally invasive or "keyhole" surgery
A Sympathectomy is division of the thoracic sympathetic chain to treat hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating of the hands, arms and armpits.
This operation is performed on both sides of the chest at the same time and when successful will reduce sweating immediately. It usually requires one night in hospital.
This operation cuts the nerve responsible for sweating in the body. Depending on the level it is cut at it will reduce sweating of the face, neck, upper limb, chest and back and even lower limbs.
VATS (Keyhole) Lung Surgery
The benefits of VATS (Keyhole) lung surgery is the quicker recovery and fewer complications experienced by the patient.
For all kinds of lung nodules, either primary lung cancer or metastatic nodules to the lung, this 2 port approach is safe and well tolerated by patients.
These operations are now standard practice in most hospitals in Malta and by default all lung surgery will be attempted in a minimally invasive (keyhole) manner.
